Ten teams were playing in a UKMA league in West Wales on Thursday night, just the same as they have done for the last five years.
UKMA has 100,000 players so ten teams isn’t at first remarkable, but this 10 team league takes plays in a remote village with a population of just 400 people!
The indoor 5 a side court which is used to host the league is accessible only by one winding path in the coastal mountains, but the local people still manage to play.
The competition originally started in 2007, with just eight teams, but grew as word spread around the villages. The Referee – local man Stephen Jones – has attended every night since its kick off and said: “Having the league in the area has been wonderful for people. Nothing like this happened before and everyone looks forward to their Thursday evenings so much. All the players know each other and there is a wonderful atmosphere full of jokes and laughter.”
The village has even sent representatives to the UK 6 a side Championships and this years winners, Crymych Crusaders are hoping to get through the group stage this time.
