Experience beat youth in a UK Minifootball league this week, as perhaps the oldest team in the country took the prize.
The Golden Oldies team, from Wirral on Merseyside beat off their youthful opponents and received their trophies.
The experienced footballers, who have more than 100 years football experience behind them, proved that whilst the may not be quite as quick as they were in their younger days, the skills were still present, as they won the league by two points after winning 10 of their 14 games.
Skipper Steve Harris was proud of his team and said they thoroughly deserved the title: “We are very pleased to have won the silverware. Especially when you consider our ages compared to the other players. We plan to play again next season and retain our crown.
Steve said that there were some raised eyebrows when he and the other players joined the leagues, they were determined to continue their football careers: “Our wives thought we were mad,” he laughed. “But we all enjoyed playing 11 a side football so much in our youth that we thought minifootball would be a perfect way to keep our careers going.”
