Big things are happening in European minifootball this year. After last year’s successful edition in Warsaw, the action is moving to Sofia, where fans can look forward to a record-breaking four tournaments played in just a few days. For the first time ever, the EMF Champions League will also feature a women’s category — a historic step for the sport. To find out why Sofia was chosen, what to expect from the new women’s competition, and how organizers are handling such a packed schedule, we sat down with EMF President Peter Králik.

1.Why was Sofia chosen as the venue for this year’s events?

Sofia, being the capital city, provides a fresh and exciting setting after last year’s edition in Warsaw. It gives players the chance to experience a new city and culture. Among the candidate cities, Sofia was the strongest choice, and we are delighted to head there. The Bulgarian Minifootball Association has done an excellent job in recent years, and we are happy to have them as our local organizer.

2.  What are your expectations for the inaugural women’s category in the EMF Champions League?

This will be EMF’s pilot project in the women’s category. While it may seem modest with only six teams from three countries, it represents an important first step. We already have interest from several more countries for next year, and I truly believe all participants will enjoy the event.

3.  What do you think will be the biggest challenge in organizing as many as four tournaments in such a short time?

The biggest challenge was already tackled during the planning phase — making sure all four tournaments could be scheduled on just two pitches within one venue. Fortunately, there is also a two-day break between the Champions League and the EUROCUP, which gives us a short pause to recover. This year will be very special, as for the first time all club competitions will take place in one location. We are excited to welcome all European teams together in Sofia, which we believe will make the organization smoother and create a unique atmosphere.

4.  What message would you give to newcomers who will be making their first appearance on the European stage?

I wish the best of luck to all teams. Minifootball is played across Europe, and this is a unique opportunity to compete with the best clubs from other countries. Our sport is very special — even newcomers can achieve great success if they stay focused and play responsibly.
