One of the most popular and long standing minifootball leagues in the UK is back up to full strength as the 2012 Academic year kicks into gear.
The league, at Loughbrough University in the Midlands has been running for nearly 15 years, attracting teams made of both players that study in its hallowed halls and live in the local community.
This year over 70 teams have signed up to play on a Sunday afternoon, a figure that stunned even the most experienced of UK Minifootball staff, as Head of Communications, Philip Stephens, explained: “Loughbrough is recognised as one the very top sporting universities in the country,” he said. “It is home to the training facilities of the England cricket teams and the facilities are absolutely superb.
“We run community leagues there all year round, and we add many, many student divisions when the term starts. This year we were absolutely astonished at how many players wanted to play – so much so we ran out of space! But thankfully we were able to secure some extra pitch time to satisfy demand.”
The league attracts over 650 players each week and is current headed by the imaginatively named Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtels, who won their game 10-0 this week.
