The UK and Ireland National 6 a side Championships saw well over 200 teams take part in the biggest one day minifootball tournament ever staged in the UK and Reading B emerged victorious after a fabulous day.
The infamous British weather had provided a deluge of rain in the week leading up to the event, but happily the superb drainage at the Birmingham venue meant that all the competitors were able to enjoy perfect playing conditions.
Last years winners from Middlesex, had started as the early favourites, but after serene progress through their groups and the early knockout rounds, they were beaten by Liverpool A 2-0 in the quarter-finals in perhaps the day’s biggest upset.
The southern teams dominated elsewhere, though, and Reading won through to face London based Enfield in the final.
It was a predictably close and hard-fought affair, but Reading managed to win by the only goal of the game, following a tidy finish from their striker.
Tournament organizer Lee Ford hailed the day as a tremendous success and said: “congratulations to Reading, to be crowned as the best Minifootball team in the UK is a huge honour and no mean feat.”
Next years tournament is already being planned and promises to be even bigger.
