The N’Joy Unileague championship in Greece has already finished its 2 big first rounds. The Greek weather does not allow the players to play minifootball during the summer and the early autumn months, so the 1st round which is a groups round, starts always at the end of November. It lasts about 2 and a half months, and after a 15 days break the second round, which is a groups round too, begins. In the 1st round there are groups of 8 teams and in the second round there are groups of 4 teams. The Easter holidays (2 weeks) follow and after that, the knockout games begin. During these days, we happen to be exactly at this point: The knockout phase has already begun in some cities and in other cities it is about to begin…
In Athens, about 50% of the total games takes place. This is not something strange if one takes into consideration that the population of Athens is almost the 50% of the total Greek population. However, this does not mean that the strongest teams come always from the Greek capital city. The history of the championship shows that only 2 times in the past 10 years an Athenian team has become the Panhellenic champion. Usually some cities such as Thessaloniki and Heraklion Crete have an amazing tradition in that! The teams that become champions in these cities and take part in the Final 16 round (national finals) are always some of the favorites of the national championship. Nobody can explain why this happens with some easy thoughts, but it is true that Thessaloniki and Heraklion Crete host always some very strong teams.
In less than 3 weeks we will know all the local champions and these will be the teams that will try to win the big trophy for the 2012.
