Cyprus were trying to put last game’s 7:0 disappointment behind them for the game against Greece as the day started.
It was a game without anything at stake as, at this stage, it was certain that Croatia and England had qualified from Group E. Cyprus’s attempt fell short as Greece were leading with two goals by the end of the opening half already.
Greece grabbed four more goals in the second period as Cyprus failed to even create chances in the utterly one-sided game. With the 6:0 win Greece finished third in their group with 4 points.
Next France played against Lithuania. France desperately wanted a point to strengthen their chance to advance to the next stage. Against their efforts, it was the Lithuanian team that took the lead as Justinas Zagurskas calmly stroke the ball home in the 18th minute.
Regis Giraldo’s straight red card in the 24th minute did not make the situation easier for France. Lithuania took the advantage and scored their second goal in the 26th minute. Minutes later, first Elie Dohin pulled one back, then Nicolas Huertos grabbed the equaliser.
Lithuania’s goal in the dying minutes made it 3:2 for them, which meant France now have to wait for the outcome of the Romania v Spain game to see if they would advance from Group D.
Germany and Moldova battled for the top place of Group B, as both teams were standing with six points after two games. Germany were on top after 9 minutes thanks to Florian Thamm’s goal. After 30 minutes of play, Moldova was still struggling to muster a reply.
Germany kept the 1:0 lead until the final whistle and secured the top place of Group B. They will face the runner-up of Group H on Friday.
